The groups of the kindred

A kindred is not only a line of descent. It is the bodies by which that line governs itself — who deliberates, who mediates, who is answerable for what.

Ụmụnna the men of the line

The men born of Areji Amoke's line. The body that deliberates for the kindred and speaks for it. Membership is by descent — nobody is added or removed.

Ụmụada the daughters of the line

The daughters born into this kindred, and theirs for life. A daughter who marries into another family remains ụmụada here and comes home to sit. Their word in disputes and in burials is not advisory.

Not one daughter is recorded in this kindred. The 2015 document names 18 people by sex, and every one of them is a son.

That is a fact about the document, not about the family. Ụmụada exist. They have always existed, they sit in disputes, they come home for burials, and this record simply never wrote their names down — as patrilineal records generally do not.

The platform will not fill this in by guessing. Sex is never inferred from a name. It stays empty until members of the family give the names, and then it fills the same day.

This is the largest gap in the record. If you are reading this and you know the daughters of your father’s house, that is the most valuable thing anybody can bring.

Ndị Inyom the wives of the kindred

The women married into Ụmụ Gwuanyi Oyi. Each founded a house, and the houses are how this record is organised. They are not ụmụada here — each is ụmụada of her own father's place.

Nobody is recorded here yet.

The wives are named in the record but have no entries of their own — they appear on the marriage and nowhere else, which is why there is no page to open for each of them. Giving them their own records, with their own people and their own line back to their fathers, is work still to be done.

Ọgbọ — the age grades

Those born within a few years of each other, convened as a set, taking a name and a duty — a road kept, a hall built, a masquerade held.

None are recorded yet. An age grade is not something this platform can work out: nobody in the record has a birth year, and in any case a grade is convened and named by the people in it, not calculated. The elders enter them, with the names the family actually uses.

You are seeing only the founding generations and the long departed. The living members of each group are shown to verified members of the kindred. Sign in.
